Need a gift for the father figure in your life? Here are 8 Canadian titles to consider. This list was originally shared on CTV Your Morning on Wednesday, June 17th 2026.

Non-fiction

For the dad who has FIFA fever, and who doesn't right now, Winning Pitch is the story of the Canadian men's soccer team. This is a very comprehensive history, so whether you are new to the sport or a fanatic, you'll be satisfied by the scope of the book. I particularly liked how it looks to the future of the sport and what we can do now to support soccer in Canada at all levels. Imitation Games is an expose on the online gambling industry. I cannot turn on a show or a podcast without being hit with gambling ads. This book chronicles how we got to this point, the tech companies behind it, and the sometimes devastating effects on the players. Wild Fire takes readers into the heart of different fires across Canada. Reading the stories of people on the frontlines was moving and and an effective call to action. Notes From a Wayward Son is a gorgeous memoir. At its core, it’s a story about a complex and difficult relationship between the author and his father, but there are so many layers here; immigration, racism, resilience, generational trauma and love. A rich and resonant read.

Fiction

Horror is killing it at the box office, so if that is your dad's vibe, I have two books for you. In The Dorians, a group of dying, elderly patients opt to take part in a secretive medical experiment on a remote island where a mad scientist-type figure is trying to stall or reverse the effects of time. In The Caretaker, a young woman finds a too-good-to-be-true housesitting gig, but it turns out the house is the only thing standing between our world and a devastating hellscape. In order to stop the two worlds from melding, she has to follow this very specific and very creepy rites. Cherry Beach is a classic hardboiled detective story set during a hot and politically explosive summer in Toronto. We follow a detective who is a good guy (and excellent cook) caught up in a corrupt system as he solves a series of murders. This is a great pick for fans of Tana French and Louise Penny. County Road Six is an intimate family drama that feels epic. After the death of their difficult father, the O’Hare sisters struggle to keep the family farm. Kevin writes beautifully about place- in this case, North Simcoe county- and the lives of rural Canadians. This is classic Canadian literature and will stay with you a long time.
